Papers, 1835-1888 (bulk 1835-1856).

The papers of a lawyer, businessman, and Collector of the Port of Bangor, Maine. Included are letters, bills, receipts, and agreements, mostly pertaining to logging in Maine. Also included are typed transcripts of many of the bills and letters. Also included is a copy of the pamphlet A tribute to the dead: Robert Ingersoll's matchless eulogy of Roscoe Conkling. Also included is An Act to incorporate the Bangor Boom Company (approved March 22, 1843).

Roscoe Conkling was a New York politician and lawyer, serving in Congress as both Senator and Representative. George W. Ingersoll was born in New Gloucester, Maine, in 1803. He graduated at Bowdoin College in 1830, studied law, was admitted to the Maine bar, and went into practice in Old Town, Maine, in 1832. He moved to Bangor where he continued to practice law. He was Inspector of Customs in Bangor and represented the city in the state legislature of 1854 and 1855 and was Attorney-General of the state in 1860, the year of his death.
